 | “My grandparents met in a prison camp for Japanese-Americans during WWII,” writes children’s book author @maggietokudahall. “Tama was the camp librarian, and George would go in every day and check out big stacks of books he had zero intention of reading so he could flirt with her. They fell in love there, in that prison camp, against the backdrop of virulent racism.”
When she decided to write about them, Tokuda-Hall purposefully chose to write a children book, Love in the Library. “I did this because I know that children can understand the full emotional complexity of my grandparents’ story,” she says. “And I did it because I also knew kids needed to hear about perfectly legal, state-sanctioned violence at an early age.”
After its publication, Scholastic offered to license the book for an education initiative—but it came with a condition: She must make a cut to the book’s author’s note, where she had “[situated] what happened to my grandparents in American history. Which is to say, I call it racism.”
Tokuda-Hall refused, even as she worried the decision might “ruin” her career. She explains why at the link in bio.
